Google Update: Why mobile friendly sites are more important

This year Google announced it would further refine its mobile search results to increase ranking on mobile-friendly pages more so than it already has.

Today we’re announcing that beginning in May, we’ll start rolling out an update to mobile search results that increases the effect of the ranking signal to help our users find even more pages that are relevant and mobile-friendly.

What does this mean for you? Mobile-friendly sites will rank even higher on mobile search rankings than before, meaning people searching for “hats” on their phones for example will be more likely shown mobile-friendly hat sites versus hat sites that are not optimized for mobiles. If you don’t already have a mobile or responsive design in place, this could affect the number of visitors to your site

Google has a few tools to determine if your site is mobile friendly, such as its Mobile-Friendly Test and its Webmaster Mobile Guide.
